My hero for this book, Dr. Ryder Alexander came from my love of Ewan... **sigh** Remember my little drama queen nursing student had puked all over my hero's shoes? Now we switch to his pov...



Ryder turned, sloshed, slipped and barely regained his balance before falling flat on his ass in the muck covering his shoes and slacks. The aroma of vomit stifled his first instinct to chase after the gorgeous brunette that had rocked his world several times over last night.

“Let her go, Ryder, we have work to do,” Dr. McMillan stated flatly.

Ryder glanced at the patient with the open abdominal wound and stepped toward the bed to assist with the massive dressing change. Disappointment slammed into his gut as the elusive woman escaped him once more.  His duty was to his patient but later, he promised himself he'd definitely be tracking Anne down.

So, what do you think? Ready to play? So let's talk firsts here. First love, to be exact. That's what the Rites of Spring is all about. Fist kiss, first love, first time sex for a character... This plays in well with my current release, Dating Impossible. My heroine, Dr. JJ Jone's first love is my hero, Dr. Cruz Avery. She had a secret crush on him in high school that she'd thought time and distance had cured her of before she'd come back to town and started working with him. No longer that gangly, awkward teenager, she'd matured into a woman with curves that Cruz definitely takes notice of. Here's a snippet of JJ's thoughts when she has a moment to step back and check Cruz out:

Her childhood crush was just that. A crush. She was no longer the gangly, flat-chested, awkward girl who longed for Cruz Avery’s love and attention. Without conceit, she was well aware her beanpole figure had developed curves in all the right places and her double D’s drew a man’s notice. They had certainly drawn Cruz’s attention just now. Her lips curved in pure feminine satisfaction. About fucking time!

Unable to resist, she snuck a peek in Cruz’s direction. As best man, he stood on the groom’s side of the altar. His attention should’ve been on his brother and Roxanne, but instead, he stared openly at her. His smoky grey gaze held a definite interest. He inclined his head.

Outwardly, she knew she presented the picture of calm, but her stomach fluttered with exhilaration. The teenage girl that still lurked inside of her wanted to jump up and down, screaming at the top of her lungs. God, she would’ve amputated her right arm for him to look at her like that when she’d been in high school.

Easily six feet tall, he’d slicked his short black hair to the side in his usual style. Clinically, she continued her assessment. Chiseled jaw? Check. Sensual mouth? Check. Broad shoulders that filled out his tuxedo jacket to a perfect “T”? Double check. Heat spread across her cheeks.

Yowza! So much for clinical.

“This is easy,” Ambra began and spun toward a tall, well- built man holding a pitcher of beer in one hand and a ping pong ball in the other. “It’s beer pong. All you do is stand where he’s standing and aim for the cups with the beer in them. We get a ball in the cup, the other team has to drink.”

With half an ear, JJ listened to Ambra’s instructions. Cruz’s warm breath fanned the back of JJ’s neck. Her concentration turned skittish. Stubbornness cemented her feet to the floor. Why was he standing so damn close?

Don’t move. Don’t move. Don’t move.

“Okay,” JJ said. “Who are we going to play against?”

“I’ll take you two on,” Cruz said. He shifted his body, stood in front of her, stripped off his tuxedo jacket and rolled up the sleeves of his dress shirt. The muscles of his tan forearms flexed with the movement.

JJ dragged her gaze away from his tanned skin and gulped. He’s just a man, she told herself reasonably. Flesh and blood. 

Extensor muscles line the back of the forearm which are used to extend the wrist while the flexors are used to flex the wrist. Under the muscles are the humerus and radius, the two bones of the lower arm.

The anatomical facts streamed through JJ’s mind, but did nothing to diminish the sexiness of those particular arms, or the memories flooding her of how they felt wrapped around her body only moments before. Combined with the heady scent of pure male, the intoxicating blend shot long suppressed sexual yearning to the surface. Flames of heated desire licked along her skin.

“Cruz,” Ambra said, turning toward him. “I’m not dancing with you ever again. Not after the last time. You didn’t just step on my feet, you mutilated them,” she complained. She inclined her head toward the bartender and squinted at his name tag. “Hey, Josh. You dance?”

Surprise registered on Josh’s face. “Why, yes, I do.”

Ambra held out her hand. “Let’s go!”

Without hesitation, he grasped her fingers, navigated around the counter, and off they went. JJ watched their progress with her back to Cruz. She sipped the tequila Josh had refilled before heading off with Ambra.

“Well?” Cruz murmured next to her ear. His breath fanned her neck, igniting little coils of warmth low in her belly that had nothing to do with the alcohol.

“Well, what?” she replied, enjoying the sensation of having him near. Reluctant to turn in his direction and break the close proximity of their bodies, she kept her gaze trained on the crowded dance floor.

“That leaves you and me. Care to get a little dirty?” His tone purred seduction.

But damn if she wasn’t all prickly one minute and hot and yummy in his arms the next. His cock hardened and he shifted in his chair. Large almond-shaped green eyes, pink pouty lips, and that sexy belly button ring and tattoos. Cruz shook his head. JJ was definitely a mix of contradictions. She was all innocence and badass rolled into one. And smart.

None of his usual bullshit lines would work with her. So how was he going to get past her no-dating-a-co-worker rule and find out if they had the possibility of a real future together? Christ, she was making this entire dating thing impossible. He rubbed the tense muscles of his neck.

Sex two nights in a row doesn’t mean we are dating. Or in a relationship.

Her words looped over and over against his skull and were the other reason why he couldn’t concentrate on jack-shit today. What he needed was a plan. But what?

He sat up straighter in his leather chair. The kernel of an idea blossomed. What if she didn’t realize they were going out on dates? Yeah, baby. He liked the notion already. But he’d have to tread carefully. JJ was a clever girl. Cruz would just have to be one step ahead of her in order to make his plan work. And once she was hooked on him… He glanced at his reflection in the full-length mirror that hung on the back of his office door and pointed to himself. His lips curved into a perfect smile and he winked.

Who could resist this?
