BUILDING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS

Since this is an issue that affects my family, I'm going to try and help build some awareness about breast cancer. The statistics are out there. Every year 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those 200,000 women over 40,000 women die! Pretty depressing, huh?

Early detection of breast cancer is the key to survival. Monthly self breast examinations and a yearly mammogram can save your life. The National Breast Cancer Foundation states that if a lump is found early and treated, the five year survival rate is 96%. Those are pretty good odds, wouldn't you say? And speaking from experience of having a loved one who suffers from breast cancer, if my mother would have sought treatment sooner, she would be in a completely different situation today, instead of fighting metastatic disease.

-Every two minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer.
-One woman in eight who lives to age 85 will develop breast cancer during her lifetime.
-Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 40 and 55.
-Seventy percent of all breast cancers are found through breast self-exams. Not all lumps are detectable by touch. We recommend regular mammograms and monthly breast self-exams.
-Eight out of ten breast lumps are not cancerous. If you find a lump, don't panic-call your doctor for an appointment.
-Mammography is a low-dose X-ray examination that can detect breast cancer up to two years before it is large enough to be felt.

A man suffering from a severe case of flatulence goes to the doctor.

Man: Doctor, I have a terrible (FARRRT!) problem. I just can't (FFFART!!)

stop farting.

Doctor: That is an unusual complaint. Take off your clothes and lay,

stomach down, on the couch.

The man does as he is told. The doctor examines him for a minute - the man

farting all the time this is going on.

Doctor: Aha! This should be easy to cure. Excuse me for a moment.

The doctor goes over to a closet and pulls out a long pole with a sharp

spike at one end.

Man: (FAART!) Oh my God! (fart..) What are you going to do with (FFFARTT!!)

that?!

Doctor: I need to open a window.



An elderly woman went into the doctor's office. When the doctor asked why she

was there, she replied, "I'd like to have some birth control pills." Taken

aback, the doctor thought for a minute and then said, "Excuse me, Mrs. Smith,

but you're 75 years old. What possible use could you have for birth control

pills?" The woman responded, "They help me sleep better." The doctor thought

some more and continued, "How in the world do birth control pills help you to

sleep?" The woman said, "I put them in my granddaughter's orange juice and I

sleep better at night."




A veterinarian was feeling ill and went to see her doctor. The doctor asked

her all the usual questions, about symptoms, how long had they been occurring,

etc., when she interrupted him: "Hey look, I'm a vet - I don't need to ask my

patients these kind of questions: I can tell what's wrong just by looking.

Why can't you?" The doctor nodded, looked her up and down, wrote out a

prescription, and handed it to her and said, "There you are. Of course, if

*that* doesn't work, we'll have to have you put down."

A well known rich businessman's wife broke her hip. The businessman got the

best bone surgeon in town to do the operation. The operation consisted of

lining up the broken hip and putting in a screw to secure it. The operation

went fine, and the doctor sent the business man a fee for his services of

$5000. The businessman was outraged at the cost, and sent the doctor a letter

demanding an itemized list of the costs. The doctor sent back a list with two

things:



1 screw $ 1

Knowing how to put it in $4999

$5000 total



The businessman never argued.

DIABETES MONDAY~FACT #15 DIABETES AFFECTS YOUR FAMILY IN UNEXPECTED WAYS!

I'm back after a couple of weeks of a much needed break. The kids went back to school today, so I'm hoping that frees up more of my time in the mornings to keep myself more organized without the frequent interruptions.

Before my diabetes post, I thought I'd give a quick update on my mom. She'd finished up her second round of chemo and had started radiation to her pelvis and tailbone when I'd visited in early July. I'd taken her to have a repeat CT Scan of her abdomen and lungs to see if the chemo had had any affect. My sister called recently to tell me that some of the tumors on her lungs have shrunk, but there are new tumors on her liver. The doctor wants to try a different kind of chemotherapy now.

This is a total blow because my mom has been feeling the best she'd felt in a long time. Strong woman that she is, she was disheartened by the news, but decided to go to Reno to go gambling for a weekend of fun. So my dad packed up the car with family and drove her up there.

I want to thank everyone for the support and prayers they have sent. It really means a lot to me.

Okay. Now on to today's post. I recently read an article while sitting in the doctor's office waiting for my son to be seen for a check up. It was written by a doctor who'd bought her son a dog, something he'd always wanted.

After eight years with their dog, Tiger, the mom noticed that he had increased thirst (polydipsia) and increased urination (polyuria) and suspected the dog had developed diabetes. She'd taken him to the vet and sure enough, her suspicions were confirmed. The dog's health rapidly declined shortly after that. Tiger started to waste away in front of their eyes as he refused to eat, and then lacked the strength to even try.

Her son was devastated. One day, he begged his mom to buy Tiger some baby food. The boy was convinced that he could get his dog to eat it. Not wanting to discourage her son's hope, but not sure that the dog would eat the baby food, the mom went out and bought baby food anyway. After all, what harm could it do?

With baby food jar in hand, the boy smeared a small amount of the baby food on Tiger's lips. An amazing thing happened, the dog licked the food off which is all he'd had strength for. The boy repeated the process over and over. After a good length of time had passed, the dog had eaten the entire jar of baby food.

Several days went by with her son feeding the dog in this manner. Soon, he had gained enough strength to lick the food from the boy's palm. Tiger's energy level increased and he was able to walk again. Over the next four weeks, Tiger seemed back to his usual health.

This part is taken from the article itself--JAMA, July 23/30 2008 Vol 300, No.4 "A Piece of My Mind--Baby Food". I couldn't have paraphrased it so that you would get the same impact:

...Brent commented the other day, "Tiger is a really strong dog. I don't think he will die." But the physician part of me has seen a substantial increase in the dog's polyuria and polydipsia over the past week. My prognosis is significant progression of his disease and death within a short period of time. Yet the mother part of me wants with all my heart for my son's prognosis to be the correct one. So I tell him, "You have given us extra time to love your dog."

After reading this article, all I could think was "Wow!" I'd never thought about how diabetes would affect people's lives if a beloved pet had the disease. How about you?

Problems with Medications


During a patient's two week follow-up appointment with his cardiologist, he informed me, his doctor, that he was having trouble with one of his medications. "Which one?" I asked. "The patch. The nurse told me to put on a new one every six hours and now I'm running out of places to put it!" I had him quickly undress and discovered what I hoped I wouldn't see. Yes, the man had over fifty patches on his body! Since incident, the instructions now include removal of the old patch before applying a new one.

DATING IN THE WORKPLACE~

I read something recently that said dating in the work place was discouraged because of sexual harrassment concerns. I can see that. Especially if the two people involved have positions where one is in charge of the other. So, companies have a valid point.

This is a subject that interests me, because the sequal to Dating 911 called Dating Impossible, my heroine Dr. JJ Jones experiences a workplace relationship which sours her on romance all together.

The majority of people's time is spent at work. I can totally attest to that! I have been accused more than once of being a work-a-holic. I work 4-5 nights per week when I only have to do 3.

So I ask you this, if not at work, then where are you supposed to meet people?

I work side by side people in serious situations every night. I know them, trust them, laugh with them. If I were single, I just can't see myself trolling some bar looking for Mr. Right.

I'd be interested in comments and thoughts about this. I'm still trying to figure out the trigger for JJ's decision to leave her old job and take on a new one at my generic Phoenix General Hospital. She's a strong, independent woman, so what would make her want to leave when the romance with a fellow ER doctor went south? I have thoughts of him making her life difficult with her co-workers, patients, and administration....boy, I have a lot of work to do!

DIABETES FACT~#14 A MEDICAL EMERGENCY!

OK! So last week I said that Brian Williams with NBC Nightly News had reported 24 million Americans are affected by diabetes and that 50 million more people are on track to get the disease.

HOLY *&^$!

Those numbers are definitely of epidemic proportion!

Type II diabetes can be caused by life style~excess body weight,lack of exercise, and poor diet choices. Interestingly enough, 95% of diabetics that have type II diabetes are the poor and don't have access to health care.

How do we get the education and the resources to those who need it most?

A national dilemma, indeed!

As an ICU nurse, I see what horrors these people endure after they roll into the ER and land in one of my beds either as a result of a diabetic complication or, a result of the multitude of health problems related to diabetes. I'm talking heart disease, stroke, and kidney failture.

What are we going to do?

Total FRUSTRATION!

Before Death - Cancel your Credit Cards



My Aunt died this past January. Her credit card company billed her for February and March for their monthly service charge on her credit card, and then added late fees and interest on the monthly charge. The balance had been $0.00, now it was somewhere around $60.00 so I placed the following phone call:

Me: "I am calling to tell you that she died in January."

CC company: "The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."

Me: "Maybe, you should turn it over to collections..."

CC company: "Since it is 2 months past due, it already has been."

Me: "So, what will they do when they find out she is dead?"

CC company: "Either report her account to the frauds division, or report her to the credit bureau...maybe both!"

Me: "Do you think God will be mad at her?"

CC company: "excuse me?"

Me: "Did you just get what I was telling you, the part about her being dead?"

CC company: "Sir, you'll have to speak to my supervisor!"
(Supervisor gets on the phone)

Me: ''I'm calling to tell you, she died in January."

CC company: "The account was never closed and the late fees and charges still apply."

Me: "You mean you want to collect from her estate?"

CC company: "... (stammer)" .... "Are you her lawyer?"

Me: "No, I'm her great nephew." (Lawyer info given... )

CC company: "Could you fax us a certificate of death?"

Me: "Sure." ( Fax number is given ) (After they get the fax)

CC company: "Our system just isn't setup for death..."

Me: "Oh..."

CC company: "I don't know what more I can do to help..."

Me: "Well... if you figure it out, great! If not, you could just keep billing her...I suppose...don't really think she will care...."

CC company: "Well...the late fees and charges do still apply."

Me: "'Would you like her new billing address?"

CC company: "That might help."

Me: "Odessa Memorial Cemetery (address and plot number given. )

CC company: "Sir, that's a cemetery!"

Me: "What do you do with dead people on your planet?!"




Diet Humor

I was in Walmart buying a large bag of Purina for my dog and was in line to check out. A woman behind me asked me if I had a dog... (DUHHHH)

I was feeling a bit crabby so on impulse, I told her NO and that I was starting The Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital the last time.

BUT, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care unit with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IV's in both arms.

Her eyes about bugged out of her head.

I went on and on with the bogus diet story and she was totally buying it. I told her that it was an easy, inexpensive diet and that the way it works is to load your pockets or purse with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The package said the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

(I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy behind her.)

Horrified, she asked if something in the dog food had poisoned me and was that why I ended up in the hospital. I said, Oh NO!, I'd been sitting in the street licking my ass when a car hit me.

I thought the tall guy in back of the line was going to have to be carried out.

OKAY~THIS WAS HILARIOUS!

After such a serious post yesterday, I decided to lighten up. I came across this picture on the internet. I guess these male nurse dolls are available. Move over Ken! LOL.

My husband, who is a nurse, too, had a good laugh over this.

Someday, male nurses will be taken seriously. There are a fair number of them that I work with and they do an excellent job. I'm often struck by the prejudice in the work force that men are doctors and women are nurses.

You'd be surprised by the number of patients who think that a male nurse I'm working with who comes into my patient's room to help me with something, often think this guy is a doctor. They are often shocked. And, sometimes, patient assignments need to be rearranged because some people refuse to have a male nurse. When sometimes, he may be even more qualified and experienced to handle that patient's case then the actual nurse who is assigned.

What are your thoughts on male nurses?
